 Question
Does the church show inconsistency and conflict in its peace and justice stance? It seems that more concern is given to the fatalities of war than to the fatalities of abortion. More concern is given to having peace with enemies than having peace with God. More concern is given to calling persons to pacifism than to faith in Christ.

Someone asked me, "How am I to speak to those who what to know about our strong emphases on peace when we have so much unrest and so many divisions among ourselves as Mennonites?" I replied, "Tell them the truth! Say that we talk and write a lot about peace but things we consider more important prevent us from being at peace with each another."

Persons who are not familiar with Mennonites and read our publications must think that peace is the sum total of all that we believe. Moreover, I agree that we glowingly speak of peace but often do not practice it in our own circles. Some of our "peacemakers" are very militant about their convictions.
